Dwight Eisenhower's Social Security number was geographically associated with California!

Dwight D. Eisenhower 1890-1969

An RC Radio tip of the cap to poster "poutine" at The Fogbow who has obtained - legally - a copy of President Eisenhower's SS5 form. This is the form on which Ike applied and received his social security number in 1962. Guess what? Even though the mailing address listed on the application was "Gettysburg, PA". The number assigned was 572-64-0315. A quick check will reveal that the geographical location for the number beginning with "572" is California. So was Ike the first president to commit social security fraud? Will we have to close and raze the interstate highway system?

Of course Orly Taitz has literally made a federal case out of the fact that a social security number for Barack Obama has a prefix geographically associated with the state of Connecticut. The Social Security Administration cautions not to make too much of the geographical "area number" part of the social security numbers. The numbers are normally assigned based on the zip code where the SS5 forms are mailed today. Before 1972 the numbers were assigned based on the location of the office where the person applied for the number. We can all speculate on why at least two president's social security numbers are not geographically tied with their birth place but suffice it to say the odds are as low as Orly Taitz making a cogent legal filing that fraud was involved in either case.

RC Radio is contacting social security fraud expert Orly Taitz for comment. Stay tuned on that one.

  2. Hi RC,
I'm not sure if this is still an issue, but I believe I can answer the "how" of Eisenhower's SSN being from California.

    From the SSA website:

"Prior to 1973, social security numbers were assigned by our field offices. The number merely established that his/her card was issued by one of our offices in that State."

Here is a 1962 article on President Eisenhower's vacation plans.

Here is a news story about President Kennedy visiting former President Eisenhower in Palm Springs, CA in March, 1962.

Finally, here is info on a post card sent from Mrs. Eisenhower to a Mrs. McCracken from Palm Desert, CA on April 24, 1962 (page 3 last entry).

Apparently, the Eisenhowers were in the Palm Springs, CA area from Feburary to April, 1962.

President Eisenhower's SS-5 is dated 4/10/1962. The assumption would be that he visited the local SS office in Palm Springs, CA.

Thanks for the research on this. It probably explains how Ike ended up with a "California" social security number. It is odd that he would apply for his first social security number at age 72. I assumed he would have paid social security taxes on his military pay or presidential salary. By age 72 I suspect his income was from book sales and speaking fees.

The point of the article is that another famous person was found to have a number not associated with his birth location. I believe the best explanation for President Obama having a "Connecticut" number (if indeed the infamous 042-XX-XXXX number was his) is that the processing clerk misread a 9 for a 0 in the zip code.

I was posting some comments over at Mario's site about the President's SSN and he has been sending them to Susan Daniels for comment.

She mentioned two things that are interesting.

Zip code 06814 while it is assigned to Danbury, Connecticut is set aside for the APO (military mail system). I pointed out this makes no difference to the SSA only to the USPS, but Ms. Daniels doesn't see the difference.

Then today, she pointed out something else, the first three digits of the zip code (068) designate the state as Connecticut. So the SSA would only need to look at the first three digits and not even care what the last two digits were.

I don't think she realizes how she simplified the argument for a typo leading to a Connecticut SSN.
